Overview
Camel Trekking in Merzouga is the slowest and quietest way to meet the Sahara. It suits first-time riders, families and older travelers, since the camels walk at an easy pace and a cameleer holds the lead rope the whole time. You meet at your hotel or camp on the edge of Erg Chebbi, where some dunes rise about 150 metres. The caravan heads into the sand for about an hour, then you climb a crest on foot to watch the light change across the dunes. Sunset is the most popular time, but sunrise rides are cooler and calmer. After the ride you share mint tea before returning.

Good to know
What does Camel Trekking in Merzouga include?
A camel, a local cameleer, a stop on a dune crest, a scarf if you need one and mint tea afterwards.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. Children usually ride with or next to an adult, and the cameleer leads the camel on foot.
Sunset or sunrise?
Sunset is the most popular. Sunrise is cooler, quieter and good for photos.
Is riding a camel uncomfortable?
Getting up and down feels a bit sudden, so hold on tight. The walk itself is gentle.
Can I stay overnight in the desert?
Yes. Add a night at an Erg Chebbi camp, with standard or luxury tents.
Is there a weight limit?
Please tell us in advance if any rider is over about 110 kg, so the cameleer can choose a strong camel.
What should I wear?
Long trousers, closed shoes or sandals, sunglasses and a light jacket for the evening.
